Sponsored by America’s State Parks First Day Hikes occurs on the day of the New Year. It’s a time where all the State Parks are encouraging people to get out and enjoy what they have to offer. We have been spending a lot of time at Kanoplis State Park and enjoyed hiking on the first day of 2024.

Eagle nest above the trails. During nesting season the trails will be closed. We did see 3 eagles in the trees at the campgrounds. Also saw some pelicans that are still enjoying the winter in Kansas.

Didn’t see the beaver, but it’s been busy.

I especially enjoyed seeing the evidence of the beaver. That’s a sight I’ve yet to see in real life, although I’ve read that there are beavers in the east Texas woods. It’s funny: I’ve never taken a first day hike at one of our state parks simply because so many people do. When you have even one per cent — a half-percent! — of the Houston area population heading for a park, it’s too crowded for my taste. I save the state parks for mid-week winter days, and head to my ‘secret spots’ on holidays.
Happy New Year, and happy hiking!

Hi- I left a comment on a much earlier post. I wanted to include a photo of yours in my mom’s story about her life (for personal use). I don’t see another way to contact you. Here’s the original post:
