Finally Butterflies

They aren’t quite butterflies yet, but I was so excited when I found the monarch caterpillars!!  I planted the butterfly garden a few years ago and this year we have SO many butterflies.  I also found 10 caterpillars on my parsley.

We haven’t had the monarch butterflies yet, but we have hundreds (and hundreds) of Painted Lady butterflies.  They are enjoying the Rough Blaze Star, one of the native plants that I bought at the Arboretum of the Plains in Hesston, KS at their spring sale.  Their fall sale is this weekend.  You can bet I will be there!!

New Flock

I started my flock all over again this spring, with 6 Red and 2 Ameraucana chicks.  The Reds were sexed so I knew they would all be hens.  The Ameraucan were straight run.  I picked out my Ameraucanas with the hopes that they would be hens and give us colorful light blue Easter eggs.  Of course my girls have names…..the 2 Ameraucana are Lucille and Ethel.

Meet Ricky, formerly known as Lucille

And Fred, but sometimes I still call him Ethel

Ricky and Fred with Reba and Midge

I enjoy sitting out surrounded by the zinnias watching the chickens (hard to see them thru all the honeysuckle).

Last year when I clean up the hollyhock bed, I scattered the seeds along the fence by the hen house.

We are still waiting for our first harvest of eggs.  Hurry up girls, we are ready for Farmer fresh eggs!

6 Years Old

It just doesn’t seem possible that Wylie is 6 years old!!  I always bake him a “cake” and of course there are presents.  This year I decided to make “cupcakes”.  Following a basic meatloaf recipe, his cupcake was made of elk, carrots, and spinach.   A cupcake wouldn’t be complete without frosting.  Wylie’s frosting is plain mashed potatoes (no salt or butter).  Happy Birthday, Wylie❤️

Patiently waiting

I Thought Summer Was Over

Today certainly hasn’t felt like autumn, the temperature is in the 90’s, the air conditioners are running again, and there is a strong south westerly wind, blowing in the smoke from the wildfires out by Pueblo, Colorado.  Come back Autumn!!

Praying for the safety of the firefighters and everyone who is in the path of the fire.

Good Night Moon

I always loved reading that story to my son.

Beautiful Kansas moon.  The first full moon after the Harvest Moon is the Hunters Moon.  The fields are barren after the harvest and the prey is unable to hide in the crops.  This is the time to hunt and stock up for the winter.  With the full moon hunters were able to stalk the prey at night.  This moon is especially important to Native Americans.
