I am amazed, I can’t believe it, but it works (so far!!)
I have had a lot of sparrows in my chicken yard. They are even getting into the chicken house, and I’m like a crazy woman in there wielding a broom to get them out! There are HUNDREDS of the little birds. The sparrows eat a lot of food, my girls like to dine on organic feed, scratch grain and meal worms, not what I want to be feeding to a huge flock of sparrows. I’m also concerned about wild birds spreading diseases to my girls. Another thing that really made me want to find a way to get rid of the sparrows, I have a very large pyracantha shrub in their run (yes their chicken run has numerous shrubs and even rose bushes). Last year the wild birds ate ALL the little green berries that were to be beautiful orange berries in the fall. This year my bush was again loaded with lots of berries, only to be devoured again, ENOUGH!
I Googled “how to get rid of wild birds in your chicken run”. It was good to know that I’m not the only one having problems with unwanted birds. The solution……..
Hang CD’s in the chicken run. What? It actually works!!
This spring we had netting installed over the run to protect the girls from a hawk. The perfect way to hang CD’s throughout the run.
It’s been 2 days and there has not been any wild birds in the chicken run or even sitting in the trees or on the fence. I hope it keeps working!!

I hope it keeps working, too. If you were to walk down any of the boat docks in our marinas, one of the things you’d notice is the number of CDs hanging around. Sailboaters, especially, use them to try and keep birds from roosting on their boats. It’s not always successful, but that’s partly because the birds can get up above them, where they apparently feel safe. But in your situation, I think they might do well. Good luck!

Oh that would be frustrating to have birds roosting on your boat!! Have you seen any of the bird deterrent tape used? I ordered some from Amazon as backup. The CDs are only a temporary solution, but I hope it’s enough to disrupt their habits for awhile!

I didn’t know there was tape. But I do see the occasional motion-sensored owl, whose head moves any time a bird flies by. The consensus on that one? Great marketing, very poor protection!

And I am going to try it on geese and coots who are going to like the grass seed and tender shoots. There will be lots of explaining to the neighbors!!

I’m made it thru day 3 and NO birds. If you read the other comments “shoreacres” who lives on the coast didn’t see it working at the marina. Hopefully my prairie birds don’t get use to the CDs and return to the chicken run.
The tape I was telling you about might be another deterrent if the CDs fail. I do think it will be more effective than you throwing ice cubes at the geese!

What happens? Light reflection scares them?

I think it is the shiny reflection and with a light breeze they are constantly moving. The bird deterrent tape is shiny and it make a cracking noise in the wind. Thankfully it doesn’t bother the hens.
I’m just amazed that it works. I really had a sparrow problem.
