This was such a unique sound that I hadn’t heard before on our early morning walks. What made it even more interesting was that I had been on the phone the previous day to Dell support in India. When you have their support they “take over” your computer and in no time it’s running again like new!! Amazing, I highly recommend Dell computers and support. The tech saw my home screen and comment how beautiful it was and if that’s where I lived. That started a great conversations about our countries, one of the things he told me about were the monkeys and other wildlife. The first thing I thought about when I heard this sound coming from the trees, monkeys! Of course I know there are no wild monkeys in Kansas. I recorded the sound and sent it to my son. He told me they were Barred owls. It certainly is awesome to hear, I haven’t seen them yet but hopefully we will.

This is really interesting. I heard a sound just before dawn one day last week that I thought might have been an owl. It did sound sort of like this; I’m going to have to do more research and see if barred owl is what I heard. They’re supposed to be around here, so it’s possible. Right now, we can hardly hear anything for the cicadas! I think they ought to be ending their concert one of these days, but they’re still having a go at it!

Wylie would love to be with you as he loves cicadas! He will run from tree to tree hunting them. I had never had a dog that ate cicadas. I had no idea that dogs ate them, but they must be quite a delicacy. If they ingest a lot tit can cause GI upset. So far we’ve only heard a few of them. Wylie has a limit of 3 per day.
We are not in the barred owls territory, but they have been encroaching in the areas of the spotted owl. Biologist have recommended that they be culled in order to protect the spotted owl. I have rather enjoyed hearing them in the mornings. We have a lot of the great horned owls. Years ago I found one in the ditch along the side of a road. I wrapped him up in my coat, and was driving with him in my arms looking into his beautiful face, hoping that he didn’t decide to start misbehaving! He smelled awful, like he had been too close to a skunk. I took him to the Game Warden. I lost contact with him after that, so I don’t know what ever happened to him.

They do don’t they!! With it still being dark in the mornings when we walk, it certainly made me wonder what animal was out there with us. Its common to see deer, turkey, racoons, possums, coyotes, but not monkeys!
