Summer Days

It has seemed like a long hot summer, but then again it doesn’t seem possible that school will be starting in just over a week. We were able to get out early on the hot days and get our usual walks in. As always we head up to the Ottawa County lake.

The eagles nested up in the east end of the lake and I saw one eaglet.

A small pod of pelicans have returned.

Buttonbush that is native to this area

A quick day trip to Cheyenne Bottoms out at Great Bend, KS. It’s been so hot and dry that the ponds were mostly dry. Will have to return when there’s water and the waterfowl are migrating. We then went into town to the Veterans Park. One of the two beautiful graceful swans that the City of Great Bend purchased to discourage the geese from the pond (as I was told by a local)

Didn’t work

What beautiful photos! I’d never heard of using swans to deter geese. As you say, there’s not much that deters them, and apparently swans can’t pull it off, either. I’ve never seen a swan, but I’ve seen buttonbush; it’s one of my favorites. For a variety of reasons (no AC in the car for two months, hurricane Beryl, days and days of rain, work, etc.) I’ve not been out much, but your photos are an encouragement to ignore the heat and get out there again!

I was concerned about you with hurricane Beryl. I can’t imagine that widespread destruction, storm surges and all the rain. Makes our tornadoes seem minor (unless one is in its path!!)
I was so excited to see the swans. I wasn’t able to get them both on a photo, but they certainly don’t discourage geese.
So wonderful to hear from you!!! We have cool weather for a few days, I hope it makes it to you, certainly give one a fresh outlook!

Personally, I wasn’t particularly affected by Beryl, except for all the downed trees in the neighborhood. For some reason, I never lost power, and believe me — I was giving thanks for that! Otherwise, it’s been one of ‘those’ summers: first there was the need to replace the car’s AC and catalytic converter ($$$), then there were a few trips into Houston to the eye doc, and then, this past week, someone did a number on my car while it was parked, so now I need to get that repaired. Insurance will cover that, but it’s still a hassle.

I’m ready for fall, believe me!
