Northern Lights a Comet and Big Boy

October was an amazing month in Kansas. It started October 10th with the northern lights making for a beautiful night sky. It wasn’t as visible as the photos show, adjusting the setting on my iPhone really made the lights shine. Just looking at it, the sky had an eerie reddish tint. So beautiful.

October 15 gave us a once in a lifetime view of the Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas. Last seen in the Stone Age (how do they know that?), it will be visible again in about 80,000 years. I don’t think I will be seeing it again.

Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 also made a stop in Salina, KS. This is the third time in recent years that it has stopped here. Built 1941-1944, weighing 1,200,000 lbs it was made to haul freight over the mountains in Utah and Wyoming.

Finally! I’m out in the Texas hill country, and even though I read your post at home before leaving, I’ve been having trouble getting a firm internet connection to comment. What absolutely beautiful sights! There were a few people north of Houston who posted images of the northern lights, but I couldn’t see them this time around — nor the comet. Too much light pollution, and since I don’t like driving after dark any more (at least around the Houston area) I didn’t venture out to give it a try farther north.

Big Boy visited Houston on this trip, but I wasn’t able to get down to see it. It’s still one of my favorite memories. I always wished my dad had been alive to get to see it.

It’s good to see a post from you! I’ve missed you. I hope all’s well. Give Wylie a pat for me!

Have miss you too! I sent you an email recently, to var********.com. Do you still have that one?
Little Wylie – what can I say about him. He is SO adorable! Can’t believe next month he will be 14.He’s healthy and very active. We are still walking daily, he has lot of miles on those little paws.
I’m still struggling with the “new” version of WP. I found the old version today and it’s so good to reconnect. That being said there are benefits to the new version. Just hard to relearn.
So wonderful to hear from you!
