A sign of Spring is “chick days” at your local farm store. We are increasing our flock due to the losses from a hawk. Our plan was to pick up 4 or 5, but I left my “list” at home.
This is what’s in our box. Six ISA pullets. They are a hybrid from a complex series of crosses including but not limited to Red and White Rhode Island Reds. Wonderful layers! Beautiful large brown eggs. Also included in the box are two Golden Comets, a cross between Rhode Island Red and White Leghorns. They don’t have names yet, I can’t tell who is who. They are SO cute!
We moved the nursery this year. They are living in the feed room on the chicken house. This will make it easier to keep watch over them and Mr. Farmer won’t have to babysit them in his shop.
Starting them off right with organic starter/grower. I used this non medicated feed last year and had the best luck with it.
The temperature in my feed room is a constant 60, but for a few weeks they will be under a heat lamp. They grow so fast. In only 18 weeks they will be laying eggs!! I like mine – over easy.
Farmer Days 
Oh, my gosh. They are so cute. In fact, they’re so cute they make me want to raise some chicks — although I have nowhere to keep them, and I suspect even if I did my apartment management might not approve of chickens in the house! It’s amazing that they’ll be laying in 18 weeks. I get big, brown eggs from a farmer, too — I’ll have to ask what breed her chickens are. I know this — the eggs sure are good!
We’re moving into full spring, here. I just posted some photos of our local wildflowers — they’re starting to go crazy.

Thanks for stopping by!! Little chicks are so adorable. You know they make the cutest little coops, I don’t think your neighbors will mind if you keep them supplied with eggs. Just don’t get the ones that crow!! It’s early for me to have chicks, but the weather forecast for the week is rather warm, we are a full month ahead of when we usually get them.

Yes this is brave, as it’s earlier than when I usually get them around St. Patrick’s day. They are in my feed room of the chicken house, it’s heated and they are under a heat lamp. They are all doing well!! I know we aren’t done with cold weather in Kansas. It changes from warm one day to freezing the next.

LOL You know him, he doesn’t mind! It is a lot nicer having them in the feed room of the chicken house, easier for me! Wylie gets so excited when I tell him we are going to go see the babies. I always get one out for him!!

They are so adorable. Mr. Farmer looked at them yesterday and asked me if I had gotten some other chicks. They are growing so fast and changing, not by the day, but by the hour!!
