Good Night Moon

I always loved reading that story to my son.

Beautiful Kansas moon.  The first full moon after the Harvest Moon is the Hunters Moon.  The fields are barren after the harvest and the prey is unable to hide in the crops.  This is the time to hunt and stock up for the winter.  With the full moon hunters were able to stalk the prey at night.  This moon is especially important to Native Americans.

Headed My Way

They had been forecasting a severe outbreak of storms for a couple of days. We had one roll through at 3 am this morning.  Lots of loud thunder and lightning. Wylie woke me up to let me know it was storming.  The day was rather nice although it was windy. Late this afternoon storms started developing just west of us. After this cloud passed we received some heavy rain, no hail. I love watching storms coming in.

God bless everyone who is in the path of Hurricane Matthew.

Farmer Days Windmill

A windmill is something I have always wanted.  They stand as proud sentinels on the Kansas plains.

So many of them no longer operating and showing the ravages of time and weather.

When Wylie and I are out on the backroads, we occasionally (always) find a place to shop that has treasures from the past and present.  There is a great shop in Lucas, Auntie Gurtie’s Art & Antiques (please check out her page of Facebook!)  On a recent trip to Lucas, I finally got a windmill!!!

Unlike the time I asked Mr. Farmer to hang a galvanized bucket upside down in the chicken house for a chandelier, his reply “You want me to do what?”,  he liked the idea of hanging a windmill wheel on the outside wall of the house.  If you follow Pinterest you have probably seen these half wheels, they are very popular in decorating.

Mounting the half 6′ wheel required some thought on how to secure it so it wouldn’t rattle in the wind.  Mr. Farmer designed some brackets to hold it securely.

The job was not without injury.  While cutting an anti-rattle device (plastic hose), Mr. Farmer cut his thumb.  He also designed his bandage!!

I love art work, especially re-purposed art!

A Walk In My Backyard

It’s nice to spend time outside on these cooler almost fall days.  Some plants are finished blooming for the year, others are reblooming and some are just starting.  I love this time of year!

A thunderstorm just passed.  This has been the most unusual summer with August being so rainy.

Sunday Morning

The day started early, well not really as I’m always up by 5:15, I love mornings.  At that time of day, all I hear are birds, occasionally coyotes, I certainly miss my rooster crowing.  A friend from town brought out a young rooster that someone couldn’t keep, but he turned out to be a she.  She’s a nice young hen, makes a great addition to the flock, Max is now Maxine, still looking for a rooster.  I was happy when I heard the bobwhite quail this morning, I was worried that they were in the brome that was cut.

Mr. Farmer is going to spray the horse corral and needed the round exercise pen taken down.  All he has to do is ask Wylie if he wants to get in the tractor, it’s Wylie’s favorite.  Mr. Farmer designed a seat for him that wraps around my seat, so he has a space all the way around the back of the tractor.  I’m always ready to help out as the tractor has a climate controlled cab☺  Please don’t let me drop all of the panels!

Even with his designer seat, my lap is still his favorite place!

I just put a pot roast in, lunch is at 12:30 if you can make it!  I see leftovers in our future.  Hash, bbq beef sandwiches, enchiladas……….makes for quick meals.

Hay’s Down

Finally a week without rain, they were able to cut the brome today.  Unlike alfalfa (and the yard!), which you can get multiple cuttings, brome is only cut one time.

I’m going to miss the tallgrass, it provided a shelter for my butterfly garden.

The hay is left to dry for a few days, then it will be baled into large round bales, with the Kansas winds it will dry quickly.

Hay’s Ready

It’s been quite a week in Kansas weather wise.  There were sever weather warnings issued  everyday.  The brome grass is ready to be cut, as soon as the fields dry out they will be cutting and baling hay.  It’s wonderful to see a beautiful partly cloudy Kansas sky, instead of one filled with storm clouds!

Wednesday, May 25th there was a large tornado that form just to the east of us.  It was on the ground for over an hour and was up to 1/2 mile wide.  It stayed mostly over rural areas, damaging around 25 homes, some that no longer exist. The tornado narrowly missed Chapman, which was devastated by a tornado in 2008.

This is the backside of the tornadic storm.  It was amazing to watch the thunderhead grow so rapidly.

There are many videos of the tornado that occurred that day, search for:  Kansas tornado May 25, 2016, Dickinson County
