Hoglund Dugout

Located west of Lindsborg, KS is the Hoglund Dugout.

Gustaf Hoglund and Maria Olsen were married in 1871.  Living in the dugout they homesteaded 80 acres.  They built a small shanty around the dugout, where they lived until 1880.  At that time they built a large 2 story 5 bedroom, as their family had grown to 8 children.  The home was built to the east of the dugout, which then served as a root cellar.  The children never married or moved from the farm.  The youngest child, Alma died in 1975.

The dugout was filled with water due to the all the rains and flooding.  I’ll return to the dugout when it dries out as I’d like to see all the rock work and how deep it is.  The dugout is only a couple miles from Coronado Heights, which is closed due to erosion and the only road being washed out.  Miss going there as it’s so beautiful this time of year with all the yucca, spiderwort and butterfly milkweed.

Everything Is Full

Tornado warned thunderhead east of Salina, KS

Most of the reservoirs in Kansas are at record capacity levels.  This is Tuttle Creek Dam in Manhattan, KS  Yesterday  5/28/19 the elevation was 1133.27 MSL (58.27 above normal pool).  Today they began increasing the release of water.  Water is being released from the outlet tubes and not the emergency spillway.

Flooding between Abilene and Enterprise.

Today was a beautiful day with no rain.  Just waiting for it to dry out so I can get on the mower.

A Few Beautiful Days Of May

After the flooding in early May be had some days that were so wonderful.

Always enjoy walking on one of our favorite backroads.

Beautiful Mother’s Day flowers from my son and his family. Thank you!! I love you all so much.

With rain in the forecast I cut some of my peonies. Oh no rain!

Flooding

We’ve had a lot of rain over the last couple of days. The Mulberry Creek is out of her banks. I don’t know how much rain we’ve received as my cute little rain gauge froze last winter and I haven’t put the new one up yet. It’s on my “to do list” for tomorrow.

The back roads around us all look the same.

The road to the north.

The road to the south.

The blacktop into town was closed in multiple places. It’s amazing how many people go past the barricades and drive thru the flood waters.

Miles of gravel roads will need repaired.

Flooded fields

Prayers for all who are affected by the flooding.

Blizzard Conditions

The storm started out as rain and then switched to blowing snow. Roads are snow packed and limited visibility due to blowing snow. Interstate 70 is closed from Salina west to the Colorado border.

The best way to watch the storm is from inside.

Of course Wylie and I can’t stay in too long.

Out of the wind it was rather pretty.

So looking forward to spring!!!

Another Round Is Coming

The national weather service has issued a blizzard warning for our area. 6-10″ of snow with wind gust up to 50 mph. I can’t wait!! With that forecast, Wylie and I loaded up and hit the backroads.

Going to keep watch on this nest.  When we were at the lake we saw many eagles standing out on the ice near open water.

Beautiful Sunrise Prelude To A Snow Storm

I’m going to be wary of beautiful sunrises!! The weather system started as rain and changed to snow.  I think we had 5″.  It love being outside when everything is covered with snow, it’s SO peaceful and calming, as long as the wind isn’t howling and I’m all bundled up and not freezing.

No patio dining.

Beautiful Sunrise

I love sunrises. Mornings are my favorite time of the day! I also like afternoon and sunsets and stars. I really like all the day!

It’s was a beautiful start today.

Makes one wonder what the weather has planned for us. There is snow in the forecast. Hopefully it won’t be like the blizzard that we had a few days after Thanksgiving.
